How Might We… create a tool that connects people to personalized support services while also encouraging positive self-reflection and assessment?
Jurni is a web-based SaaS platform that enhances mental wellness through personalized, insight-driven journaling. By securely analyzing your entries, Jurni provides tailored insights, recommendations, and resources to support your mental health. Whether it’s tracking mood patterns, offering journaling prompts, or connecting you with mental health professionals who specialize in your needs, Jurni empowers you to take control of your mental well-being. Additionally, the platform allows you to share your journal entries directly with your provider, ensuring a holistic and informed approach to your care.
Goal: Create a high-fidelity prototype of the web app that implements the brand’s visual identity while ensuring a user-friendly experience throughout.
My Role
As a UI/UX Designer at Generate Product Development, I collaborated as part of a cross-functional design team to execute the complete end-to-end design process, including user research, wireframing, prototyping, and branding.
This project took one semester to complete.
Background Research
Our research for this project consisted of:
Benchmarking major competitors on design elements and functionality of the applications (Reflectly, Alan Mind, Tangerine)
Types of notes used by therapists/mental health professionals (MHPs)
Sitemap
A sitemap was created to map out the user journey throughout the platform, helping us identify the necessary flows and screens.
User Personas
Jurni is designed for individuals seeking to enhance their mental wellness through an insight-driven journaling platform. While users can vary in age, they generally share a comfort with technology and a strong commitment to personal well-being, which tends to attract a younger audience. They are open to digital solutions, regardless of their experience with mental health services, and are eager to explore new ways to support their mental health.
Key Features
Home Page
Purpose
The Home page is the hub of Jurni which features quick glimpses into different pages of the platform.
Design Process
In designing the Home page, our goal was to provide users with a clear, intuitive overview of the available pages, while incorporating prompts that support their journaling goals. We carefully balanced content by offering previews of key features, like graphs, without overwhelming the user, and intentionally used white space to create a clean, calming interface. This approach ensures that users can navigate the platform effortlessly, staying focused on their mental wellness journey.
Journaling Functionality
All Entries
Purpose
The All Entries page allows users to past journal entries.
Design Process
The entries are thoughtfully organized by month and year, with easy-to-navigate buttons at the top for quick adjustments. We’ve incorporated 2-3 graphs or insights for the selected month, allowing users to instantly grasp the overall mood and trends of that period. To reduce text heaviness and enhance visual appeal, we’ve added mood-summary emojis to each journal entry, creating a more engaging and user-friendly experience.
New Journal Entries
Purpose
The New Journal page allows users to begin journaling by either creating a new entry or choosing from curated journal prompts.
Design Process
The New Journal Entry page enhances the journaling experience by offering users the flexibility to quickly jot down notes, track their daily mood with intuitive buttons, or start a new entry, along with browsing journal prompts. To prioritize user privacy, we’ve integrated an easily accessible privacy toggle to securely lock notes, and customization options are available to make the journal feel personal and unique. Additionally, to address sensitive topics with care, trigger warning pills are included to conceal potentially distressing titles until the user chooses to reveal them.
Analytics
Purpose
The Analytics page provides users with comprehensive data derived from their journaling.
Design Process
Similar to the All Entries page, the Analytics page organizes data by month and year, with easy navigation through clickable filters. Designed modularly, the page features five graphs of varying sizes that seamlessly fit into a 3x2 grid, optimizing both readability and comprehension. To enhance user trust and understanding, a hover-over box in the top corner provides explanations of the science behind the graphs, demystifying the technology and ensuring users feel informed and secure.
Resources
Purpose
The Resources page serves as a central hub, offering users valuable information and support on mental health to assist them in their journey.
Design Process
The Resources page is thoughtfully organized into three sections: Therapist, Media, and Shopping, each equipped with tailored search bars and filters to refine resource discovery, such as searching therapists by insurance provider or filtering media by topics. Media items are presented in versatile card sizes to suit the content, with larger cards in the Therapist section featuring detailed bios, images, and contact buttons, while smaller cards for media, like podcasts, include succinct topic tags for quick reference. This design ensures users can easily navigate and access the support and information they need in a visually intuitive manner.
Branding
Our goal was to create a brand that embodies Jurni's core values of trust, fun, approachable, and human. Guided by these principles and the app's mission to support mental wellness, we developed a brand identity that reflects Jurni's forward-thinking approach while deeply resonating with users on an emotional level.
Color
Jurni strives to make its users the most comfortable on its platform as possible. One way we’ve pushed this is by letting users choose their color for their workspace and have Jurni be a reflection of their personality. The brand colors will adapt to their pick.
Type
The typography used in Jurni brand is meant to appeal to its younger target audience and provide a fun, friendly platform for young adults to express their emotions.

Next Steps
There are some edge cases we couldn’t address within the timeline of a semester, such as error messages for incorrect login information, notification pop-ups to encourage users to explore new features, and onboarding screens. Additionally, while we've designed the entire page in a desktop format, we strongly recommend focusing on mobile screens, as most websites are accessed on mobile devices. Developing a dedicated app would also be highly beneficial, allowing users to stay signed in longer, receive notifications, and use features like the microphone without needing browser permissions first.
